Kris Oak – From Anxiety & Depression to Holistic Health Coach

Introduce yourself

Hi there, I’m Kris! I’m from Luxembourg and have been living in Lisbon for 3.5 years. I’ve lived abroad for the past 10 years (wow, I’m getting old) I’ve lived in Innsbruck/Austria, in Cape Verde and now in Lisbon and I can’t wait to find out what my next destination will be. I used to work as a recruiter but gave up my job in February 2016 to start my own business as an Online Holistic Health Coach. Besides that, I’m married and I love practicing Ashtanga Yoga, cooking and baking plant-based food, playing guitar and my dogs and horses back home in Luxembourg.

What is a health coach?

A Health Coach is someone that helps and guides a person towards a healthier life. Many people struggle to transform their health goals into action due to their stressful everyday lives. There are different types of health coaches or wellness coaches, some focus on weight management, others on reducing stress, others on mindfulness… I’m an Online Holistic Health Coach, which means that I believe that being healthy is more than eating healthy, it’s about the relationship you have with yourself, with others, with your career. That means I help people to find a healthy balance for their body, mind and soul.

What inspired you to become a health coach?

My own issues. Over the years, I have suffered from severe anxiety, panic attacks and depression but I wasn’t aware of it. Until one day, when I had the worst panic attack. I was sure I was going to die. I couldn’t breathe, I felt dizzy, I was shaking, my heart felt like it was going to explode, I was sweating but my hands and feet were ice cold. So, my husband took me to a hospital where I was given strong tranquilizers. The doctor then immediately wanted to prescribe anti-depressants and that was when I realised that I had to change something, that I couldn’t ignore my issues anymore. After that, I started researching what I could do to help myself. So, I completely changed my diet, started practicing yoga, started meditating and going to a psychotherapist. What really surprised me was that when I told people about this, almost everyone of them could relate to it because they or their partner had a similar experience. They thought that’s just how life is and that there is nothing that can be done. That’s why I want to help and show people that it totally is possible to live a happy and healthy life because if I can do it, so can everyone else.

What was your biggest obstacle in realising your dream?

Quitting my job as a recruiter to actually start my own business.

How did you overcome that?

It really wasn’t easy, I had the idea of starting my own thing for several months before I took action. I read as many blogs from female entrepreneurs as possible, Planet Backpack from Conni Biesalski was a huge inspiration, plus my husband was a huge support. I was incredibly scared telling my boss because my team and my boss were nothing but nice and supportive since I started working there. So, one day, I just couldn’t bear this feeling anymore, I knew that I had to do it right now, so I went to my boss and asked if I could talk to him. I thought they were going to hate me for that but it turns out that this fear was just in my head, they supported me 100%

What is your biggest tip for loving yourself?

Telling yourself that you love yourself every single day, especially on days where you feel like shit. Making sure you take time for yourself, time that is only for yourself. It doesn’t need to be much, be it to read a book peacefully, for meditation, taking a hot bath to relax or going for a little walk after work.

If you could take over broadcasting to every TV and radio station in the world for 30 seconds, what message would you give people?

Everyone is different, what works for you might not necessarily work for someone else. Instead of doing a ton of different diets and feeling guilty about things you eat, learn to focus on the signs your body is giving, it’s telling you what is good for it and what isn’t. Eat mindfully. Being healthy isn’t about diets, it’s about a positive mind-set, loving yourself and nourishing your body (and enjoying yourself 100% when you eat that occasional pizza or cake!)

What is your superpower?

My real-world superpower is that I can create empathy easily, people open up to me easily and know they can trust me.

My superhero power would be Omni-linguism, the ability to understand any form of language, like Wonder Woman. So that I could speak and understand every language, no matter where I am in the world.
